Letter 2 June 1847.

Dr. W.A. Ash wrote this letter to Dr. Samuel B. Merrifield, thanking him for intervening on his behalf with the President of the United States (James K. Polk.) Ash was trying to obtain a surgeon's commission for the Illinois 6th Regiment, newly formed in the shadow of the Mexican War. He wanted a commission with the 6th specifically because they were to be based in Scott County, Illinois. The regiment had signed a petition on Ash's behalf, who then secured Merrifield and former Kentucky Governor, Charles A. Wickliffe as his advocates to the President. By the time this letter was written, however, Ash had still not received his commission. He asked Merrifield to remind the President of his petition.

His life and career were marked by a relentless pursuit of his goals instead of the dramatic aura that perpetually surrounded Jackson. The effect...
